The most important of the many fluids found in your vehicle is undoubtedly its motor oil. Without motor oil, your engine would quickly grind to a halt at the behest of intense grinding and friction among its many moving parts.
In addition to lubricating your engine to ensure it can function properly, oil also acts as a coolant for your engine. Every time you drive your car, the engine heats up at a rapid rate. Motor oil cools down when confronted with heat and helps to regulate your engines temperature.
Motor oil also serves as your engine’s cleaning crew. While its coursing through your engine’s veins, it’s filtering out small soot particles and bits of debris – elements so tiny that they can’t be seen by the naked eye but can nonetheless inflict damage and lead to malfunctions.
With oil performing so many duties, it’s no wonder that it needs to be changed regularly.
The more you drive, the more work your ]oil has to do to keep your vehicle’s engine in good working order. Older or overused oil will thicken and start to cause serious problems for your motor as moving parts begin to grind against one another.
Your oil should typically be changed every three months or every 3,000 miles. This is generally when oil reaches its maximum viscosity and needs to be replaced in order for your engine to maintain its operational integrity.
