What Car Repairs Can I Do Myself?

Taking your car in to see the mechanic can often feel like an inconvenience, and drivers might be tempted to forego necessary repairs for the sake of saving time and money. While this might feel like a good idea in the moment, skipping routine services and repairs will end up costing you far more down the road, and you risk permanent damage to your vehicle. If you are looking to save some time by skipping a trip to the mechanic, there are some easy vehicle repairs you can do yourself without even popping the hood of your ride!

How Easy Are Auto Repairs?

There are certainly some auto repairs that are easier than others. In general, any repair that involves anything under your hood will be significantly harder for an amatuer to figure out how to DIY, but there are a few options that only take a little time and know-how.

Replace Your Windshield Wipers

Your windshield wipers certainly go through a lot, and if you live in an area with especially unpredictable weather, you’re likely to see frequent wear and tear to your wiper blades. Thankfully, replacing your windshield wipers is one of the easiest car repairs for a novice to perform. Most windshield wipers can be taken off easily and the new ones can be fastened into place with no additional tools. To get new windshield wipers, you can go to your local auto supply shop, or the auto section of a larger department store.

Change Your Headlight or Tail Light Bulbs

Driving around with a burnt out headlight or tail light is not only a safety concern, but can also put you at risk of an unwanted traffic ticket! Good thing replacing a headlight or tail light is another simple auto repair. For this, you’re going to want to save the burnt out bulb from the light, and see if you can find a match at your auto supply shop or auto section of a department store. If you’re lucky, you might be able to have an employee help you out with finding the right replacement, but there’s no guarantee of that, so it’s best to do your own research for this quick fix.

If It’s Under The Hood, Leave It to The Pros

While these auto repairs can be simple, you might just end up spending as much, if not more, of your time trying to figure out these repairs than you would have at your local mechanic. And for any repairs or services under the hood, it can be difficult for an amatuer to figure out what they can do safely, so it’s best to leave it to the professionals.
